Maisie Boulton Kilpin

Maisie is an emerging oil painter who has recently graduated in Fine Art Painting from the University of Brighton.

Maisie seeks to encapsulate beauty within the most mundane subjects, capturing intricacies of the everyday through her oil paintings. Her practice primarily focuses around British suburban living, atmospheric scenes that are commonly illuminated with fleeting patterns of light. Whether it's a passing window or a lived-in bedroom, each painting reflects a separate space and pocket in time that may never exist again. Maisie’s work centres around the small moments of stillness that we exist in, between the busy parts of life.

The majority of her paintings are oil on wooden canvas and small in scale to invite study. Each piece is created using only a few different pigments in one single painting session. Her colour pallet is often warm and inviting, as she consistently uses a thinned wash of burnt umber to sketch out and prime her paintings. Maisie focuses greatly on the physical qualities of oil paint to enhance the subject, using a variation of purposeful brush marks and textures to mimic the different surfaces within the real-life environments.

Each piece represents a separate moment and place familiar to her, captured with a deep sense of appreciation and sensitivity.
