Melina Mageira

A 2026 graduate of UAL Camberwell, Melina's practice focuses on womanhood as a lived and psychological experience. Through figurative painting, she constructs scenes that feel simultaneously intimate and unsettled, spaces, where memory, emotion and social expectation press against one another without resolution.

Figures occupy ambiguous environments that seem to absorb and reshape the bodies within them. They float, cluster, sit at floors or thresholds, their faces are present but withheld, their faces heavy with something unspoken. They’re all informed by real women of her life – mothers, daughters, strangers, friends and celebrities. Groups of women in school uniforms, mirrored postures, they all share something together. These choices communicate the way identity is both shaped and dissolved into collective expectation.

She limits her palette deliberately, allowing muted, recurring tones to create a sense of suspension, although scenes exist outside linear time, somewhere in between memory and anticipation. A red coat, scarf, a show cuts through the grey like pressure made visible.
